What belongs in a consultant's email signature
A consultant sells judgement, which cannot be demonstrated in a signature. What a signature can do is avoid the three things that make a one-person practice look smaller than it is.

The title problem, stated plainly
CEO of a firm with one employee is checkable and invites a discount. Founder says how the entity came about rather than what you do. Principal is the convention in consulting and works, but says nothing about the discipline.
The strongest choice is the discipline itself: Operations consultant, Pricing strategy, Manufacturing process. It tells a prospect in three words whether to keep reading, and that is the only job the line has to do.
Say what you do, not that you help
Taglines like Helping businesses reach their potential are so common that a reader's eye passes over them without registering. If you want a line below the title, make it specific enough that a competitor could not use it: Cost-to-serve analysis for industrial distributors is a filter. Trusted advisor to leading brands is not.
The booking link earns its place here
Consulting engagements almost always begin with a conversation. A booking link naming the duration — Book 20 minutes — removes the round trip of proposing times, and it is the one signature element that produces a measurable outcome in this field.
Place it below the phone number, in the same font size as the rest, as a text link rather than a button.
Credentials, with a filter
A relevant professional qualification carries weight where a client checks for it: chartered status in accountancy or engineering, a certification that gates access to certain work. Include those.
Three sets of post-nominals do not stack. Beyond two, they read as insecurity, and the third one is usually the weakest.
Company details, where required
If you trade through a company, the statutory particulars apply to you as they do to any other company — registered name, number, place of registration and registered office in the United Kingdom, comparable rules elsewhere. If you trade as a sole practitioner under a name that is not your own, a lighter rule usually requires your own name and an address for service.
Keep that block at 11 pixels in grey, below everything useful.
The size discipline
A consultant's signature that carries a logo, a headshot, a tagline, three certifications and a row of social icons is 25 KB and reads as compensating. Name, discipline, phone, booking link and a small legal block comes to under 2 KB as text with one 8 KB logo, and looks like someone with nothing to prove.
In a field where the product is judgement, restraint in the signature is not a neutral choice — it is itself a signal.
What the whole thing should weigh
Name, discipline, phone, booking link and a statutory block, as text, comes to about 500 bytes. Add a logo displayed at 80 pixels and exported at 160, kept under 10 KB, and the signature is around 10 KB total.
The version with a headshot, a logo, three certification badges and a row of social icons is 30 to 40 KB. On a twenty-message engagement thread that is 700 KB against a 102 KB truncation point, and the client loses the history of what was agreed.
The check worth doing once
Send your signature to a colleague and ask them to read it as though they had never heard of you, then say what you do. If they hesitate, the discipline line is not doing its job — and that line is the only one a prospect reads before deciding whether to reply.
Frequently asked questions
Should an independent consultant use the title CEO?
It is checkable and invites a discount. The discipline — operations consultant, pricing strategy — tells a prospect whether to keep reading, which is the line's job.
Is a tagline worth including?
Only if a competitor could not use it. Generic phrasing about helping businesses reach their potential is skipped by every reader.
How many certifications should I list?
At most two, and only ones a client would check for. Beyond that they read as insecurity.
Does a booking link belong in a consultant's signature?
It is the element most likely to produce an outcome in this field, because engagements begin with a conversation. Name the duration.
