How to set an email signature in Yahoo Mail

Yahoo Mail does not give you a place to paste HTML source. It gives you a small rich-text editor, and what arrives in that editor is whatever your browser put on the clipboard. That constraint shapes everything.

Where the setting lives

1. Open Settings (the gear, top right) → More Settings.
2. Choose Writing email.
3. Under Signature, switch on the toggle for the address you want. If you have several addresses on the account, each gets its own.

The paste is the whole technique

Because there is no source view, the only way to get a designed signature in is to render it somewhere and copy it. Open your signature in a browser tab, select it, copy, and paste into the Yahoo box. The browser puts both a plain text and an HTML flavour on the clipboard; Yahoo takes the HTML flavour and then runs it through its own sanitiser.

What survives that sanitiser, reliably: text, bold and italic, font colour, links, images referenced by URL, and simple table structure. What does not: external stylesheets, classes, most padding and margin declarations, and anything positioned.

Build for the sanitiser, not against it

The practical consequence is that a Yahoo signature should be built out of a table with inline styles on every cell, exactly like an Outlook-safe signature. If your design depends on margin to space things out, that spacing will disappear. Use empty cells with an explicit height, or cell padding, both of which Yahoo keeps.

Images need to be hosted

Yahoo will not accept a local file or a data URI in the signature editor. The logo has to live at a public https:// address before you paste, or the image simply will not appear. Set the width and height attributes on the image tag before you copy, because you cannot fix them afterwards in the editor.

The mobile app is a separate setting

The Yahoo Mail app on iOS and Android keeps its own signature, and it is plain text only. Setting a rich signature on the web does not change what the app appends, and vice versa. If most of your mail goes out from the phone, the designed signature will rarely be the one your recipients see — which is worth knowing before spending an hour on it.

Testing what actually left the building

Yahoo's preview in the settings screen shows you the signature as Yahoo's own editor understands it, which is not the same as what a recipient receives. The sanitiser runs on save, and the mail transport can make further changes. The only test worth trusting is to send a message to an address on a different provider and read it there.

Send one to a Gmail address and one to an Outlook.com address. Those two cover the great majority of what your correspondents use, and they fail in different ways: Gmail strips style blocks and clips long messages, Outlook.com is closer to the Word engine. If the signature holds in both, it will hold nearly everywhere.

The line height problem

The most common visible defect in a Yahoo signature is vertical spacing that looks right in the editor and doubles on arrival. It happens because the editor wraps pasted content in its own paragraph elements, each carrying a default margin the sanitiser did not remove.

The fix is to make the outer structure a table before you copy it, not paragraphs. A table cell has no default margin, so there is nothing for the editor to preserve or the recipient's client to interpret differently. If you have already pasted and the spacing is wrong, clear the field completely before pasting again — pasting over existing content leaves the old wrappers behind.

Length, and the reply case

Yahoo appends the same signature to new messages and to replies, with no setting to shorten it on replies. On a thread of six messages that means six copies of everything you put in it. That argues for a shorter signature here than you might use in a client that lets you distinguish the two cases: name, role, one number, one link, and nothing that repeats badly.
